Thanksgiving Travel Safety Tips

This week, families and friends will come together nationwide to join in Thanksgiving festivities. The holiday weekend is one of the busiest travel times of the year with tens of millions of people driving to their destinations. If you will be on the road this year to get to a Thanksgiving celebration with friends or loved ones, keep these tips in mind to ensure you arrive safely.

Check your Vehicle

Before undertaking any kind of road trip, inspect your car thoroughly so that you do not encounter any surprises once you are underway. Use the following checklist so that you can be confident your vehicle is in good shape:

  • Windshield wipers – make sure wiper blades are intact and clearing effectively – if not, replace them. Check wiper fluid level.

  • Brakes – check for wear on brakes pads and replace if necessary. Check brake fluid level.

  • Battery – test for charge level and clean connections.

  • Tires – check treads and tire pressure and change to winter tires if you use seasonal tires.

  • Lights – check your headlights and brake lights for safety reasons, but you also do not want to be pulled over and get a Thanksgiving ticket.

  • Antifreeze – November is a good time to make sure your car is prepared for cold weather so check your antifreeze level and fill it up if necessary.

Carry an Emergency Kit

Every car should always have an emergency kit. Now is the time to check and make sure your flashlight batteries are fresh, etc. If you do not have one, pick one up before your trip or assemble one, making sure to include these items:

  • First aid kit and any other medications needed by the people traveling with you

  • Basic toolkit

  • Flashlight and extra batteries

  • Phone charger and charging cable

  • Jumper cables

  • Blankets and warm clothes

  • Water and food – also pet food if your pets are along for the ride

  • Shovel and ice scraper for stormy weather

  • Sand or kitty litter for traction in an emergency

Practice Safe Driving

Once you are prepared for travel, take a moment to remember safe driving behaviors that can help avoid the most common causes of car accidents.

  • Avoid distracted driving by programming your GPS before your start the car and once you are on the road, do not text or use your phone. Pull over if you need to make a call or text someone, or let a passenger do the calling.

  • Never drink and drive. If you have indulged during Thanksgiving festivities, let someone else take the wheel. Do not risk a drunk driving accident.

  • Always use your seatbelt and make sure your passengers do as well. Even a fender-bender can result in whip lash and other head and neck injuries that can be far worse if no restraining device was in use.

  • Prepare yourself for heavy traffic and delays. They are unavoidable during the holidays and aggressive driving will not get you to your destination any faster, but you may end up in an accident.
