Seeking Compensation for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

A traumatic brain injury, commonly referred to as TBI, is an injury suffered as a result of a shock or blow to the head or brain, similar to other traumatic injuries, such as broken bones, torn ligaments or tendons, or a severed nerve. However, because of the role that the brain plays in relation to the nervous system, motor skills and cognitive processes, a traumatic brain injury can be far more devastating than any other type of traumatic injury.

The Characteristics of Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injury may be caused by a direct blow to the head or brain, but it can also occur if a person either stops suddenly or is subjected to a sudden and powerful movement in any direction. These types of jolts can cause the brain to collide with the skull with significant force, causing brain bleeds or nerve/tissue damage. A person can experience traumatic brain injury as a result of the impact of a car crash, even at what seem to be very low rates of speed.

Traumatic brain injury is customarily categorized as mild or severe. The symptoms of a mild traumatic brain injury include disorientation or confusion, or even loss of consciousness, for less than 30 minutes. A CAT scan or an MRI may not show anything abnormal, but the victim may experience cognitive dysfunction, including memory or calculation problems, have headaches or mood swings, or find it difficult to maintain concentration or focus.

If a traumatic brain causes loss of consciousness for more than 30 minutes, or if memory loss persists more than 24 hours after the injury. A severe traumatic brain injury can result in loss of function in arms or legs, abnormal speech or language, loss of cognitive ability or other emotional problems.
