Most Dangerous Toys 2019

The holiday season is upon us and that means toys are flying off the shelves in retail stores as adults rush to fill the wish lists of the children in their lives. When these toys have design and manufacturing defects, they can become a dangerous and even deadly product

The consumer safety group, World Against Toys Causing Harm (W.A.T.C.H.) has compiled a list of what they consider the most dangerous toys on the market in 2019. The group aims to alert adults about the dangerous features of the toys on their list that can potentially cause serious injury or even death.

2019 W.A.T.C.H. Most Dangerous Toys List

  • Nerf Ultra One Dart Gun: This toy shoots rubberized darts but discharges them with enough force to cause eye injuries.

  • Spike, the Fine Motor Hedgehog: The plastic quills on this toy are removable, which pose a choking hazard for young children.

  • Bunchems Bunch ‘n Build: Hard plastic connective pieces on this toy can become loose, posing a high risk for choking. The pieces can also become entangled in hair.

  • Yeti: This stuffed animal has very long hair that can be ingested or aspirated if it becomes loose.

  • Nickelodeon Frozen Treats Slime: The realistic smoothie-type slime can cause irritation and digestive issues if children ingest the material. Though the package comes with a warning that the product is not edible, young children may still be tempted to eat it.

  • Anstoy Electric Toy Gun: This toy gun is so realistic looking that it could be confused as a real weapon.

  • Diecast School Bus: Removable rubber tires on the bus are a choking hazard to young children.

  • Flybar Pogo Trick Board: Possible head and limb injuries may happen when using this board because models on the product’s packaging mislead children to believe helmets and other protective gear are not necessary when operating the board.

  • Power Rangers Electronic Cheetah Claw: The mechanisms and operation of this toy could potentially cause eye and facial injuries.

  • Viga Pull Along Caterpillar: With a two-foot-long pull cord, this toy presents a strong risk for entanglement and strangulation.

Product Liability Lawsuits

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, over 252,000 children were treated at emergency rooms across the country for toy-related injuries in 2018. Thirteen children under the age of 12 died as a result of their injuries. W.A.T.C.H. uses toy recall data, statistics, and reports from children’s hospitals around the nation to determine the year’s most dangerous toys.

Toy manufacturers, distributors, and retailers have a legal responsibility to ensure their products are safe and free from unnecessary hazards. When a toy has a design or manufacturing defect that causes an injury or death, the manufacturers, distributors, and retailers can be held liable in a product liability lawsuit.
